Not too long ago I contacted Rep. Brad Schneider’s office asking for help in facilitating the immigration of the Iraqi family that we are trying to help through HIAS. His office contacted the State Dept., as I’ve shared before. Just the other day, I received this letter from the Congressman via email and thought I’d share it with you:
Thank you for contacting me to express your concern regarding the well-being of refugees seeking entry to the United States. I greatly appreciate your input as I work to represent your interests in Washington.
On March 6, 2017, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to temporarily halt the United States Refugee Admittance Program and limit the number of refugees allowed to enter the United States to 50,000 per year. Further, the Administration’s budget blueprint eliminates funding for the Emergency Refugee Assistance program. These actions are disgraceful and discriminatory measures that harm the very people who need help most at a moment when the number of displaced people has unfortunately reached a record high.We cannot allow fear to overwhelm the very values that define our nation and harm the next generation of Americans seeking refuge from war, violence, and oppression.
That is why I joined the thousands of people at Chicago O’Hare airport to stand against President Trump’s actions. It is why I sent a letter urging the House State and Foreign Operations Committee to approve $3.604 billion for the Migration and Refugee Assistance Program and $50 million for the Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance program. I am also a co-sponsor of H.R. 724, the SOLVE Act 2.0, which would deem President Trump’s executive order null and void and deny federal funding for its enforcement. Please know I will do everything in my power to ensure our nation does not slam the door shut on those seeking to build a better life for themselves and their families.
Thank you again for reaching out to me on this important matter. Hearing from constituents like you allows me to be a more informed and effective Member of Congress. If I can be of further assistance to you on this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact me or my office.
Member of Congress
Let’s keep our prayers in action so that they might arrive soon.
